Our group class program is unlike any other and covers all major styles of Ballroom and Latin dancing.
Unlike most Ballroom dance lessons which teach only the steps in group classes, we teach the basic elements of each dance with full technique right away, creating a dancer who has a thorough understanding of dance and can use it confidently.
Our program is taught in levels, with the entry Level 1 being designed for someone with no dance experience. Each level leads to the next, creating a road map for dancing that will take the beginner through the intermediate and then the advanced levels.
Choosing Your Group Class
We teach Group Classes by style of dance, not by individual dance. Each dance in every style has similar technical elements, so a student can learn more dances in less time by learning the whole style rather than a single dance. A major benefit of this is being able to dance more than one dance by the end of your class.
Please see the descriptions of each style of dance below and the dances contained therein. This will help you get a feel for each style and provide you with clues as to which style you would prefer.
American Style Dances:
American Smooth: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz Sign Up Now
American Rhythm: Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Bolero, Mambo Sign Up Now
The dances in the American style are so named because they are danced only in the United States. They are danced socially and competitively but are usually more conducive to social dancing, being slightly easier to learn, lead and follow. The American style is expressive and fun to dance.
This style is divided into 2 categories:
American “Smooth” and American “Rhythm”.
The “Smooth” division contains 4 ballroom-type dances: the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. Please click to read more about Smooth.
We recommend learning the American Smooth style if you are interested in social dancing (vs. competitive), prefer more freedom of expression, or have an event to prepare for where you will be dancing to classic ballroom music, such as music by Frank Sinatra.
The “Rhythm” division contains 5 latin-type dances: the Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Bolero, and Mambo. Please click to read more about Rhythm.
We recommend learning the American Rhythm style if you are interested in social dancing (vs. competitive), like knowing a wider range of dances, want to be able to latin dance, or prefer a latin type music to a more traditional “Ballroom” sound.
International Style Dances:
International Standard: Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep Sign Up Now
International Latin: Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive Sign Up Now
The dances in the International Style are so named because they are danced in all countries including the United States. They are the internationally accepted forms of Ballroom and Latin dancing and are collectively known as “Dancesport”.
Generally more conducive to the more “serious” student of dance, the International Style is elegant and more refined than its American counterpart. It takes longer to master, but delivers a feeling of grace, ease and speed that many find appealing.
This style is divided into 2 categories: International “Standard” and International “Latin”.
The “Standard” division contains 5 ballroom-type dances: The Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep. We recommend the International Standard style if you like tradition, prefer more graceful dances and enjoy a challenge. Please click to read more about Standard.
The “Latin” division also contains 5 dances: The Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive. We recommend the International Latin style if you love Cuban, Brazilian or Spanish music, prefer dances with more structure or are a more technically oriented dancer. Please click to read more about Latin.
Nightclub Style Dances:
Nightclub Dances: West Coast Swing, Nightclub 2 Step, Hustle, Salsa Sign Up For Salsa Sign Up For Other Nightclub Dances
Nightclub style dances are intended for, you guessed it: nightclubs. Generally their own “genres”, these dances are useful in that they are either danced socially in clubs specifically meant for them or that they are versatile enough to be danced to a variety of music.
There are several dances in this category, including but not limited to: West Coast Swing, Nightclub 2 Step, Hustle and Salsa.
We recommend the Nightclub styles of dancing if you want to learn a specific genre (for example, Salsa), are dancing for predominantly social reasons, or are not as interested in the technical aspects of dancing. Please click to read more about the Nightclub style dances.
